Notes
Enock made a visit to this community to continue teaching, sensitize the residents on the core values of proper sanitation as well as reminding them on the dangers of open defecation, encouraging proper construction and maintenance of facilities, monitoring the facilities which are under construction and advising them how to construct sustainable facilities by using the available materials more so cement, sand and brick to those homes which can afford them. We walked in a home of Stellah Nakaziba who has just moved to this village, constructed a new latrine after completing the main house. She was super excited to show us her new facilities and appreciative for the lessons brought by kibo to develop their community. This village has a trading centre where some residents rent houses there and have some small businesses of shops selling household merchandize. Two of the homes didn’t have proper latrine structures, Enock talked to the chairman and VHTs who were available to take the initiative and talk to the landlord to construct a proper latrine for homes which are missing latrines, this is because the landlords don’t stay in this village, and they usually come around during the weekends. The women chairman and VHTs Madam Rebecca Nabirye, she is a widow but she took the initiative to pay someone to construct for her a good latrine and new dish rack which where missing in her home. We also walked in the home of Naiganga Betty who is a VHT and has also improved on the drainage systems of her shower area, took the initiative to also smear her kitchen and encouraging the neighbors to use Ash in their latrines. This village has active women leadership which is so empowered and takes the lead to also continue encouraging fellow women to construct as well as maintain the facilities even though your their husbands are not always home. The women leadership has embraced the program and willing to help their fellow residents to also change from the old behavior of open defecation.
