Notes
When we reached this community, we first walked in a couple of homes to mobilize the residents to come for the Hand washing triggering meeting, to also check on the target homes which had pits but not completed the latrine walls. The good news was two of the homes have already completed the construction of the structures. We met the families, encouraged them to smear the facilities and maintain their sanitation. The rest of the homes who had lost their latrines due to heavy rainfall, were making foundations but this time they bought cement and sand to make good and a strong foundation. After walking in about 25 homes, we went to the meeting where we had called people to come for the hand washing triggering session. During the session, the chairman LC1 stood up to open up the meeting, we also got a word of prayer from one of the residents then introduced the Interns. Enock started to introduce the Hand washing triggering lessons, asked questions about hand washing, like why don’t people wash their hands before eating, after visiting the latrine. The residents gave answers like most people are just lazy, they don’t know the importance of washing hands. During the discussion, Enock taught the residents how their hands attain germs in so many ways and eat the germs everyday, spoke about the diseases which result from not washing hands, people always shake hands and transfer germs from one place to another. After all that, we discussed the importance of washing hands where the people learnt so much from the lessons and embraced the program. The men and women are willing to work together to improve their sanitation and hygiene levels through making hand washing facilities and using them effectively. We then demonstrated how to make a hand washing facility and everyone saw how it’s done, we emphasised on cleaning it and not only leaving the responsibility for the women and children but also the men to work together with their families. This will help to improve the health of all the families if they continuously use the hand washing facilities and have the discipline of washing hands. The chairman and VHTs also promised to check all the homes to see if they have constructed the Hand washing facilities, teach them since they attended and learnt how to construct it as well as encouraging all the residents about the importance of washing hands. They all agreed to have soap around the areas where the facility is constructed so that the germs can be killed, also the continuous use of ash was emphasised strongly to every home. After using the latrine they can use ash to chase flies out and cover there fecal matter. The hand washing facility has to be constructed in an open space where the sun can be able to shine on the water in the jerrycans to reduce algae from growing in. Generally the residents are willing to work hard to construct all the facilities.

Current State

Success
There are many good standard facilities constructed in many homes
Village Critical Needs
They have three broken boreholes and now some people are resorting to fetch water in the swamp. One of the boreholes has a problem of the cylinder and they asked them for about 500,000 shillings to repair it. The residents say they have no money at the moment as they are waiting for the harvesting period to sell off some crops so that some people can contribute for repairs
Village Action Steps
To continue maintaining all facilities and reconstruct the facilities which broke down due to heavy rainfall
Staff Action Steps
To carry out a triggering on hand washing facilities.

Village Notes
There were a good number of residents who attended the hand washing triggering session. The people seem to be understanding the importance of hand washing and planning to construct them in their homes as well as properly using them.
