Enock with the group of interns from Harding university and Oklahoma university teamed up to travel to this village. The reason was to check on the progress of latrine construction, dish rack, shower areas, kitchen areas, rubbish pits and other facilities. They walked home to home as they taught the families the challenges and problems which result from open defection and reminding them about the diseases like cholera which may even kill the whole community, dysentery, trachoma, diarrhoea and many more which are caused due to open defection and poor hygiene. The people are responding greatly by digging pit latrines, constructing shower areas, digging rubbish pits and dish rack construction. There are already 6 newly built latrines, we saw 4 new shower areas, one new kitchen well smeared, 3 new rubbish pits and 7 new dish racks all in different homes. The pick axes are super busy and on high demand. Most of the residents didn’t have proper latrines in their homes. They need to dig deep latrines which are a good standard. Kibo is encouraging them to build/construct sustainable facilities to avoid repeating the same work every year. As they continued walking around, they taught the importance of using Ash in latrines to chase flies. The residents are embracing the program and willing to improve the sanitation of the village. The students from Harding university and Oklahoma got to see how a pit latrine is dug, we found in one of the homes two men were digging a latrine hole and it was about 10ft, they are planning to dig till 25ft deep.
